13.06 Grammar
To ask or say “may or “can”
use “E mafai ona”
you can decide whether to follow with the action or with the person
If you say the action first use “a’u” and “oe” for “I” and “you”
ex. E mafai onu alu a’u i le paka.
I can go to the park.
ex. E mafai onu alu oe i le paka.
You can go to the park.
If you refer to the person first and then the action use “ou” and “e” for “I” and “you”
ex. E mafai ona ou alu i le paka.
I can go to the park
ex. E mafai ona e alu i le paka.
You can go to the park.
When using “ia” (he/she/it) there is no other form. Just change the placement of the word
If you use an adverb (word to describe the action–slowly, loudly, etc) use it following the action word
The adverbs “toe” (again) and “matua” (very) are exceptions
use “toe” and “matua” before the action word rather than after.
To negate the question or statement “I may not” or “I can not”
add the word “le” before the word “mafai”
ex. E le mafai onu alu a’u i le paka.
ex. E le mafai ona ou alu i le paka.
